Originally constructed in the 1920s during the colonial Indochine period, our building has a rich history. Initially a bustling rice depot when Kampot was a major port, it later transformed into a Khmer Rouge theatre during Cambodia's tumultuous years.
In 1979, as Vietnamese forces moved through the country, it became a military barracks, where many military artefacts were discovered during our renovations. With peace restored, the building served various roles, including a lumber yard, gym and the governor’s residence. In 2005, it was transformed into the charming hotel it is today.
In 2004, Dom and Denise sought to create a boutique hotel and restaurant in Cambodia. Their journey led them to the tranquil town of Kampot, where they found an ideal riverside property steeped in history.
After moving to Kampot in 2005, they began renovations and, by October 2006, opened Rikitikitavi, named after Rudyard Kipling’s short story "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi."
Our dedicated team started small but has grown to 30 enthusiastic employees, with some original members still with us today. In 2024, Dom and Denise returned to Europe, passing the torch to new management.
Today, Rikitikitavi is run by Paolo, who aims to uphold the original spirit of the hotel. Our mission is to provide exceptional service, a relaxed environment, and meaningful employment for the local community.
The Riki team prides itself on its warm and friendly nature. We love meeting people from all over the world and strive to ensure all guests enjoy their stay as much as we enjoy being here.
